SiP 67 Public Comments for Letter Column
« on: Jul 28th, 2004, 10:46am »

Just my latest presumption.  I know Terry puts these official posting topics up (and a few issues ago I stopped putting a "Private Comments" topic to complement it) but the issue is in my hot little hands, been reread thrice and I have to get the comments out before they bore a hole in my head and start leeking all over my desk and staff.  Terry, feel free (and why wouldn't you) to replace this topic with a real comments topic.

Just to make it semi-official, as Terry wrote in the Issue 66 Comments topic: Quote:
Post any comments for the next letter column here. Please sign a name to the comment...it doesn't have to be your real name but the readers like to think a real person wrote the thoughts. Internet signatures like "ScooterBoots", "X15ZeusButt" will keep us from using the letter, no matter how great it might be.

On your mark, get set, GO!

..... and I'm off (in more ways than one):

Terry,

The issue did a fine job of reestablishing the plot threads that were playing out PW (Pre-Wedding) regarding Sara and the case file excerpts.  After the profound glee that reading the inner cover ad produced (missed the "Finding" on the first glance and got really excited, but this will do), I was all set to catch-up with Sara.  I was initially relieved to discover that her recall was relatively harmless, and marveled at how you portray her analytical thinking; matching Lindsey/Olivia with a minimum of clues (unless, of course, she has a subscription and has been reading along with the rest of us).  However, I was somewhat disappointed that she's let her unaccountable embarassment so cloud her judgment.  Imagine, you go undercover as an artist model and are surprised when you discover that the art gets displayed (what did she assume, it was all for Katchoo's private collection?)  No wonder federal "intellegence" agencies have been lambasted in the 9/11 report, they used the same lack of deductive reasoning there.

I understand that we all have blind spots, but Sara has been portrayed as a consumate professional.  It's all the more surprising to find her thinking so confused on this point (not to mention going to the extreme of plotting revenge (however large or small that revenge may be).  As I expect this will play out slowly, I hope you'll reveal a deeper explanation or allow Sara to reconsider the rashness of her initial reaction.

You continue to highlight Freddie in fine form (though the faint was a bit too predictable).  I hope he has some future (temporary or permanent) with his morgue angel, Dr. Stryker (even Charlie Brown was allowed to win one game).  The footnotes were a nice compliment to the inanity of the action.

Many thanks for the issue, I look forward to all the hi-jinx the back inside cover promises with Casey.

This issue:

*reads* Huh? That's it? *reads again* Hmmm, that's strange.... *counts pages*
How did you do that? It's 19 pages as usual, but it sure feels like less... kinda like a session with a shrink *Ri-iing* "Time's up! See you in six weeks!" and you sit there, mouth agape as if stopped in mid-sentence going "but...? but...? I...? erhm..."

I dunno, maybe it withers a little in the shadow of the introspections in the last issue.

Nonetheless, once more a nice mix of text-pages, the comic and Katchoo's work. The first three pages are very Bruckheimer-ish IMO, especially liked the "montage" with the explosion in the background... together with the following text pages it was hard NOT TO imagine those scenes in moving images. tho I can't ignore the dis- and reappearing ear protection, hehe.

Freddie's selective-lawyer-view on the world around him was, well, revealing in more than one way. While reading those panels I thought "Alert! Pending Nervous-Breakdown!". That poor silly man *shakes head* good he's seeing a doctor now.

The morgue was not at all as I expected it. A corpse coming from the freezer but steaming? Is that really what it is like? Undecided
Even though I wasn't grossed out or offended by it in any way, I would've prefered the use of Hitchcock's technique to let the onlookers scare themselves with their thoughts. A blurry, smeared fingerprint probably would've done the trick.

But say, Sara really loves to win an argument, doesn't she? LOL

Now what I really can't agree with, is how fresh and young Det.Walsh looked in this issue... that's just not fair. Sad Wink

I'm puzzled by Sara's reaction to Noelle's death.  She worked fairly closely with Katchoo for an extended period of time where she could observe her closely.  Was there anything in how Katchoo paints that would lead the FBI to believe that she's running the Parker Girls?

Katchoo:  "I can't get the red highlights right... I can't....  D**N IT! I have to kill someone!"

It's also disconcerting to see that Freddy and I agree about how generally obnoxious oversized SUVs are.

It's good to see Detective Walsh again, although he is (perhaps unconciously) playing with Sara's head.

Overall, an enjoyable issue.

I too am puzzled by Sara. I must have been obvious to her, from spending so much time with Katchoo the artist, that Katchoo is only doing her art. A dispassionate observer would have concluded that someone else was calling the 'shots'.

Ah, that may explain Sara. She's not dispassionate, she's in love. That's why she can only see Katchoo. And that's why she's so embarassed that her likeness is out there for the world to see. I bet in her heart, she was hoping it would stay special between her and the Kat. And not just be any ol' commercial venture.

Oh, and that steamin' body in the morgue? Betcha it wasn't steam. Betcha it was stink!

Why do I get the feeling that Sara is just a teeny bit upset about the paintings. It's gonna be interesting to see how this story goes, Sara taking it to a personal level now. Who knew FBI agents are hot in the nude? Grin

Glad to see good ol' Freddie back. Still as obnoxious as ever and hitting on everything with boobs.  Grin

VIVA LAS CASEY!! She fits right in with the glitz and glam of Las Vegas. I can wiat to see what mischef she gets into. Terry...do you think you can get me tickets for her one of her shows? Wink

Oh yeah, thumbs up on the issue. Still missing Francine though. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Smiley

Terry-
Freddie... kinda missed him. Makes perfect sense he'd fall for someone that processes dead people.
I was wondering what had happened to Sara, so thanks for the update.
Speaking of updates... WHERE THE HELL IS FRANCINE?  She's probably doing a mundane task of some sort, but at least two
panels showing her mixing up a strawberry cake or something... =)
(I realize you're a busy man, keeping all these projects together.)
Can't wait to see the "Treasury Edition!" Is is going to be a 'director's cut' style of the past arcs or just a 'best-of' clips? (God- using film language. Must have that SIP movie on the brain- have to check that site out.)
Anyway, I'm rambling... Tell Robyn we send our best and thanks for letting all of us borrow you all these years.
Keep up the good work.

Dear Terry,

Even with your three principals on summer hiatus, this is a great issue.  Now that you've sneaked in three-page samples of Katchoo's and Freddie's own comic books, I hope the other characters will present their own.  Eventually, might Freddie Bachelor Lawyer and Saphon interact on the same page, with other alter egos, all in their own artistic styles?  This could get weird.

I only wish these issues weren't so abbreviated.  I found the full page image last issue of Linda Ronstadt as misplaced as one of her mid-concert political lectures.  In #67, the only interesting detail in five pages of text or sketches is that Walsh is married.  Just draw a ring on his finger, we'll spot it.  Regarding the pocket books, you wrote: "It is amazing how the story flows... with no interruptions."  I feel the same way about the issues.

So Sara thinks Katchoo has some 'splainin to do, eh? After spending a few months in Katina's company, she can't genuinely believe that the pint-sized painter is doing Parker Gal bidness on the side... can she? If so, someone please take her badge so she can return to her true calling -- nude modeling. Hotcha!

On that topic, how could Sara go to Katchoo's studio time and again, posing (presumably) in the buff for painting after painting and then be gobsmacked when the artist dares to make the work public? Should Kat have covered her model's face with a blue dot to protect her identity? Not much foresight displayed there by Agent Bryan, followed by a display of pique disproportionate to the perceived offense. Smitten by the kitten, mayhaps? I hope you'll elaborate on that, Terry... after Kat and Casey's Vegas issue(s), of course.  Grin

Mike Walsh is cool, man. The SIP Charlie Bronson, if that role isn't already taken by Tambi. And Freddie losing a tooth due to that beastly SUV's rumbling stereo? Classic. The coroner, Dr. Stryker might be just what Freddie needs, though she might need to bring her namesake saw to cut through his bullspit.

Ohh I dunno..lets see...Sara worked with Katchoo for a bit...probably heard her talking to Tambi...that would be enough to keep Katchoo in the FBI's crosshairs.

So. Many. Questions!

I was glad to see the time-warp of Lindsey Noel's rape explained. But something doesn't ring true. I don't think pining a rape on someone is supposed to be quite that easy.

    * Why pin it on Dumoni? She had plenty of other ways to weasel her way into Katchoo's life (like Casey at the gym and then get her to recommend her services as a therapist to Francie). Why go through a trial that would surely result in scrutiny into HER life. At that point there wouldn't be any physical evidence. Nothing but her word against his. Chuck even warns her that her life will be critically examined.

    * The rape happened years ago and she thinks she'll be able to make it stick? Without an extensive background check on her past? Since she was living as Olivia Dominguez at that time, how was she going to sneak past that gap?

    * Her mom allegedly found her a few days later, wouldn't Chuck and Freddie need to interview the mom? And wouldn't records be required of the hospital stay?

    * Sure he hit on Monica (who beat the crap out of him), but his reaction of "Hey, I didn't rape anyone!" seemed genuine. And there's a line between trying to get fresh with an aggressive body builder (and getting spanked for it) and raping someone. Is that everr clarified--how far he tried to go with Monica?

    * Even if he tried to attack Monica, from my limited legal experience (Law & Order), I didn't think that would be admissible into the Lindsey Noel case. They're always having trouble with that stuff.

    * Sure Lindsey Noel is dead, but as she killed her husband and all of his body guards and set their home on fire, and then was found in that hotel room with a gun and a gas can--obviously up to no good. I don't know why Sara's so rabidly protective of her. It's like being outraged that a drug king pin got shot while trying to kill another drug king pin.

    * What was Sara looking for in the post-mortem, and what did she find in that burnt-to-a-crisp corpse?

I also agree with many of the comments made about Sara Bryan. One additional question:

    * Sara says: The bureau didn't know of her indiscretion? What does that mean? Did they not know she was posing nude? Or did she sleep with Katchoo? Though we've really seen no evidence of intimacy between them that I can recall.

Terry,

I'm a freshman in college and, if nothing else, the move has been great because it puts me near a real live comic shop where I can buy SIP and not wait months to order a TPB.

I'm one of the fans that loves the crime stories as much as the romance, but the Sara/Lindsey Noel subplot does nothing for me (Not that I'm ungrateful for the loose ends being tied up!) As other readers have commented, I find it hard to believe that Vicki could fool so many people with the rape story and have no one but Sara put it together that Katchoo was her target. I like Sara's longer hairstyle, however (hey, it's the little things) and Katchoo's sketches of her, complete with notes.

I've had a soft spot for Freddie ever since "You're a Loser, Freddie Femur!" so, yes, I'm glad to see him make a move on a woman who isn't on canvas. I was hoping for a little more given the cover, but that's something to look forward to, isn't it?

I had experienced the loss of my dear cat due to a cardiac arrest the day before the San Diego Comic-con, and I sunk into feelings of sadness and loneliness.  He had been my loyal companion for four great years, and filled my life with happiness and tenderness.  My husband was also very sad and worried about me, but he drove me to the convention, to help me stop crying and to make me think about other things.  My big motivation was to go meet Terry, and have him dedicate the book to my good friend.

I got the pocket book and introduce myself to Robyn, and she was very nice.  Then I met Terry and asked him if he could dedicate the book to Gunner, my cat who had passed away the night before.  When he started sketching on the cover a Katchoo saying "purr" and a little cat nose to nose with her with a globe with a heart, my eyes started getting watery again.  My husband held me and Terry gave me a hug and said some very nice words.

Thank you Terry, you do not know how much that all meant to us.

Even though it sounds corny, I know I will meet Gunner again, in a better place, if I manage to be a good person.  And I really wish Katchoo and Francine meet again, soon, because is horrible to be away from your best friend and from people you love.

All my admiration to you, for your good heart, and for sharing Katchoo and Francine story with us,

Love,

Monica and Juan
