Viva Las Casey!

The poster alone was worth the (accidentally reduced) price of admission.  Fortunately, that was just the topper on the continuation of a very satisfying walk through Katchoo's current mental landscape, made real by her on canvas and you on paper.

The paintings and sketches continue to be revealing windows into Katchoo's perceptions.  We see Sara, putting up boundaries as fast as Katchoo tries to rip them down.  I'm left wondering our Agent under-covered left because she got everything she wanted, decided she wasn't going to get what she wanted or was in danger of being found out under Katchoo's very discerning eye.  Of course the ever-present Francine, not only in the series of canvases strewn/arranged on the floor, but also in Justice and Winter Chronicles (Am I correct that Katchoo modeled Saphron from her construction of a somewhat older and idealized Francine?).  But where did the teddybears come from (or is that a later work, to decorate Ashley's room)?  Other than this piece, I look forward to seeing the full color work in the Katchoo gallery.

To round out the issue, two lovely bits of humor, the out of work actor (and what pretend hero wouldn't find himself with an inferiority complex after being artistically dissected by Katchoo) and Freddie's cameo at the gallery window (He obviously needs the distraction that he'll find next issue when, if the cover is any indication, he meets the medical examiner of his dreams (even if she wore baby powder, would he be able to smell it over the rest of the subtle fragrances of her office?)).

Many thanks again.

Saphron in the Winter Chronicles is patterned after Linda Ronstadt, I believe. Look at "Linda", then Saphron in the last panel on the first page of WC.

There's definitely a resemblance.  But, considering the gap between when Katchoo did the drawings of Saphron (age 17) and the painting of Linda (this past year) the connection might not be as great as the juxtaposition in this issue might lead us to believe (am I oversimplifying Katchoo's psyche to think that most of the women she paints/draws (with some specific exceptions, including herself) are in some measure Francine (if only in the negative, such as the sketches of Pia, highlighting the lack of qualities that Francine possesses)?).

In any case, only the cartoonist knows for sure. :)

If he can tell us.....

Good point. Like Francine, Linda Ronstadt is a dark-haired beauty with weight fluxuation. Apropos of nothing, "Saphron" is the Linda Ronstadt of the mid-'70s, and "Linda" is her from her early-mid '80s period.

The male model who did comics conventions.... a stand in for David...?  Huh

(I noticed after I thought of it that "a dark-haired beauty" is a lyric from Bob Seger's "Night Moves")

Another stunning Issue.

It felt as if we had earned Katchoo's respect, cuz how else would she open up to a bunch of strangers, eh?
I always knew it was worth the wait..... now if only I understood everything she says immediately :/ but we all hide a little, don't we?

Now I'll go and re-read it......

I saw Katchoo's tatoo  :x

I enjoyed this issue very much.  The story echoes recent events in my life.  It's nice to see how Katchoo handles a similar situation and I can learn from her experiences.

Thank you.

A good issue Terry.

I might be alone in this, but Katchoo's art leaves me cold for the most part. I just do not get any feeling or warmth out of it, as well done and as technically sound as it is. The large Francine piece belies this,  as an exception I suppose. Perhaps I am simply not as advanced an art critic as others.

Katchoo's other tattoos were interesting to see, and the meeting with Kevin Spacey and Emma was touching, if only because of Katchoo's condition.

It was interesting to see that Sara Bryan left for an emergency in Baltimore...maybe she saw herself going too much over her head and pulled out, with a good amount of psychological study on her mark? I hope the FBI/Sara Bryan chapters are not a mere tease from you.

The story Katchoo wrote at the age of 17 reminded me a lot of a source not often compared with Strangers in Paradise, I would imagine: Heavy Metal magazine. The font, the title of the story and the otherworldliness and science fiction aspect just screamed Heavy Metal to me.
I could be off, but that was the gut feeling.

It's a good arc so far Terry. I yearn to see Francine, David and Tambi again, and to learn more about Sara Bryan's investigation.

Good brisk pace, keep it up. :)

Well Terry, what can I say...I have been following this comic for less than 8 months now.  But I can safely say you are a wicked evil man.  And I mean that in the best way possible.

I just got my issue of SiP in the mail today.  And once again I am very happy I get to read these comics.  I feel for Katchoo, who has not had love fade away like Francine?

I cannot wait to see Casey again!  What has that lil dingbat gotten herself into now?  Cannot wait til we see Francine again.  And David..what has he been up to I wonder?

Thank you Terry for bringing us this comic..Keep it up!

Terry,

Ohh....thank you, thank you, thank you! I think this issue was up amongst the top ten in my book, Terry, and the beautiful sketches of our Francine was only part of it!

The look at the younger Katina was an eyeopener, as well as exactly the kind of thing I would think she'd do. Only Katchoo would steal the steak right off a celebrity's plate without them even noticing. I'd also be curious to see more of the comic book. How...you've made such a rich, real life for her, Terry. My admiration transcends words. I could go on for hours simply asking question about the art work and their background, but I have a million question below.

The internal monologue was wonderful and I think that I am finally starting to understand Katchoo in a way I never have before. I was always more like Francine, except that I dealt with the romance in my mid-teens and have already snapped up my Katchoo. It was nice to finally see the words, straight from her mind, that we always knew she felt. No grand speech at a moment of crisis said to Francine's face, but melachony private thoughts alone with a cigarette. Bravo!

Ohhh, so that's where Casey's been? What on earth made her go out to Vegas? I thought she wanted so desperately to stay with Katchoo? Hmmm.....what a difference a year can make. Maybe it was helping Katina mend a broken heart that made her run? Or am I in Hopeless Romantic mode again? *LOL*

And Sara? A few months? I thought it was supposed to be a rather long-term assignment? I wonder what all our angry blonde told her that was oh-so-valuble? Did it all could have followed go down in that year we missed? Are all the Parker Girls deceased? And where is Mary Beth for that matter? I don't think Katchoo knows about our undercover agent so.....

TERRY!!!!!  ANOTHER ISSUE!!! I BEG YOU!!! HAVE MERCY!!!

*Cough* Sorry about that. Lovely issue. Nice Cliffhanger. Wonderous art. More and more peaks into Katchoo's past. And a snippet of HR-friendly monologue on the ghost of Francine that still clings to Katchoo. What more could you want out of life?

Thank you for making my world a brighter, more interesting place every six weeks.

All My Love,

Terry

All I can say thank-you.  I have been a fan for about a year now and the stories are wonderful.  And now seeing Katchoo make it on her own without Francie tells you a lot about her but we all know that Fran will show sooner or later.  Keep up the great work and can't wait to see what happens next.

P.S.  Freddie is still annoying but I guess even he can't change.

Hmmm, seems like I'm the only one who was less than pleased with this issue. And the thing everybody else seemed to like was what I had the problem with. No not the story (which I've come to except will ammount to nothing and never ever ever go anywhere at all) but the art, or rather the lack of. Terry what's happening? You've gotten so lazy! So much of the issue was just scans from your sketchbook (ones we've seen before no less! I loved the big Francine one from the one before last, but the rest... ::) ) I remember when you would draw each painting in the background not just draw a square and plug something in with Photoshop, it's jarring and dosen't match the rest of the art. And as for the so-called "Katchoo's paintings" tch tch, trying to find something to do with your old art school paintings? I know I will probably be flamed to a crisp for this... but I'm just getting a little fed up here, I've stuck by with this homophobic little wet dream for a long time, mainly for the art. Even when the story went all WTF? I stayed for the art. Now that it too is going downhill I don't know what I'll do... go back to the issue where Casey locks Francine in a room with Katchoo and state that the story ended there, they lived happily ever after and burn all the issue that came after it.  Cry

false cover advertising.  not the first time you've done it, but still... i expected to see francine.

i liked the issue, although it seemed short.  probably because of katchoo's issue near the end.

i assume sara returned to fbi headquarters, although there is an office here in houston.

i also didn't get the issues katchoo had with drawing the girl from texas art supply (yes, i get my supplies there, too).  katchoo appears to have lost weight over the years and does not appear to have much more mass than pia.   perhaps it's because katchoo doesn't know her like she knows francine (and presumably to some extent sara).  that would be the only thing i could think of.

the tattoo was where i expected it to be, because there wasn't much left of katchoo that wasn't shown for all the times she's been at the beach.  funny way to show it, though.

as for the naysayers, i think some people don't get that this is an ongoing story and ends when terry decides to end it.  i have yet to see any permanent story events that happened and then suddenly were reversed (ala mainstream comic characters coming back from the dead).  we've revisited characters who died, but they've stayed dead.  the story evolves, and it's not always going to change in a way that everyone wants it.

i've been reading since 95 and intend to keep doing so until the end.

Ah, Terry...

Another strong issue.  Yet I still can't decide if I truly like the issues that are all exposition and little else...this really was just one big thought process for Katchoo getting us ready for her next bit...a bit that promises to be as juicy as this last little bit we've had...but I'm not sold on that method of storytelling for some reason...

Don't get me wrong, what I said above stands.  This was another strong issue, with a goodly number of little vignettes to make us think...

And I admit it...I can spot the tiniest details sometimes, but other times, well, it took me four looks before I finally realized what that Vegas flyer said...YOWZA!

The location of the tatoo didn't surprise me, but I almost expected something a bit more risque...

Thanks, Terry!

The poster-picture of Casey as a Las Vegas showgirl alone was worth the price of this issue.   :D

So comedic, yet so utterly perfect for the character.  I can't imagine a more appropriate profession for our Casey than a Vegas showgirl!

Gotta love that Casey!  :x
